LA BRIGADA LINCOLN and the feminist parable of LA CASA DE BERANRDA ALBA

Written by: Hristiyana Ivanova

10 MARCH 2020

“La Brigada Lincoln” a newly formed theatre company based in Edinburgh will premiere on the 20th and 21st of March 2020. The Spanish-speaking group has started its rehearsal process in November and are more than ready to shake the city.

Fellow students from different universities have formed the theatre company after having their show last year Luces de Bohemia. Last year’s production included students from Edinburgh University, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh Napier and more. The play had a full house on both days, with extreme interest from people all over the world. Many people from the audience had traveled from Spain to see the production.

This year the production management of “La Brigada Lincoln” has focused on creating a theatre company that crosses the line of Realism. Creating an unbelievable performance of Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba, the company takes the unbearable days of revolutionary Spain and brings them to live in the contemporary world. The directors Devian Maside and Jenny Oberholtzer have done the seemingly impossible, transferring the classics into the contemporary world whilst being resistant to its core and truthfulness.

The four daughters of Bernarda, instead of five, played by Reyes Rodrigues, Jaione Ayerra , Irene Belmonte, Gabriela Arranz and are just a few of the faces that will break the world with their emotions. Something that La Casa de Bernarda Alba does differently than last year’s company production is that it looks straight at the psychology of the tyranny of the patriarchal women and shows the limits of their sexual repression.

La Casa de Bernarda Alba will be performed at Roxy Assembly Theatre at the end of week 12. The company will provide English subtitles for theatre enthusiasts that want to cross the linguistic border.

Tickets are still on sale on their website: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/la-casa-de-bernarda-alba-tickets-94830036191?fbclid=IwAR3RwTgUL7J_QZB0_YxWN2dPm_I01GV1z6JYQKh1V5UCN9WpyHz6KTlHFdQ . Pre-sale tickets will have a discount on price.

MYSTERY OF THE “SPOOKY NEIGHBOR” FINALLY SOLVED

Written by: Ida Cumming

17 MARCH 2020

For years the presence of a mysterious hooded figure on the balcony of one of Turin’s busiest squares puzzled, intrigued, and creeped out residents and tourists alike. And rightfully so!

At first glance, the figure resembles a standing, hooded individual. Similar to a man looking downwards from the balcony, a distracted passerby might not notice anything unusual with this picture. The catch? Well, the face of the mysterious figure appears to be made out of tree-branches, sprouting out from the depths of a hollowed out visage. The effect this has on a passerby is particularly distressing.

According to our sources, this sculpture is an artwork part of Turin-based artist’s Paolo Grassino's “Zero” series.

Grassino has long been known for his sculptures and his taste for the unsettling, one of his most recent works titled, fittingly, “Disturbing Narratives”.  The artist assures distress towards his art is precisely his intent, as his goal seems to be to comment on the insanity our modern world has plunged into

“We must begin practicing for a return to nature, because man's interiority is nature. People in today's society seem to have forgotten this, leading to the insanity of our times.”   —Paolo Grassino

As this statement answers the question of the artist’s intent, though, we still have no answer as to the intent of the owner of Grassino’s sculpture and balcony both.

Was the statue strategically positioned there to expose more people to Grassino’s message, or was it merely put there as a harmless, although ominous, prank?

The answer to that still eludes us as the owner of the Turin apartment and sculpture has declined to comment.
